It is with regret that we acknowledge the passing of the Honourable Edward (Ted) Hughes, OC, QC, LL.D (Hon.) on Friday, January 17, 2020, at the age of 92.

Ted Hughes’ was British Columbia’s first Conflict of Interest Commissioner and served from 1990 to 1997. His illustrious career also included service as a lawyer, judge, senior civil servant, and commissioner of inquiry in numerous difficult matters including the death of children in public care. His advice was sought even in the months before he passed.

Ted Hughes’ legacy includes the strengthening and clarification of ethical constraints on politicians and the establishment of British Columbia’s Office of the Representative for Children and Youth.

He will be remembered with great fondness and respect for his enormous compassion, clarity of thought, and determination.
